Its new Chief, Francis Verreault-Paul, will use the campaign to raise awareness among political parties, candidates, and the general public about the urgent need for a clear commitment to First Nations. \u201cWe are asking all parties to make a concrete commitment: to respect our rights, to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and to advance priority issues such as housing and infrastructure, public safety, education, and self-determination,\u201d said Chief Francis Verreault-Paul. \u201cWe are at a turning point where fundamental decisions must be made for our future. First Nations must be part of these political and economic discussions and decisions.\u201d   <\/p>\n<p>The AFNQL&#8217;s priorities for the federal campaign are based on three main areas:<br \/>\n<strong>\u2022 Self-determination and sovereignty<\/strong> \u2013 Support and recognize governance, ancestral rights and titles, and development by and for First Nations.<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>Reconciliation<\/strong> \u2013 Develop concrete measures for legislative and economic reconciliation.<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>Implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP)<\/strong> \u2013 Fully apply the UNDRIP in all federal policies.<\/p>\n<p>Other key priorities include:<br \/>\n\u2022 Honoring and continuing to implement regional education agreements;<br \/>\n\u2022 Supporting First Nations-led initiatives in climate action and community resilience;<br \/>\n\u2022 Immediately negotiating an agreement on First Nations child and family services reform;<br \/>\n\u2022 Legislating against cultural appropriation and self-identification, including in government procurement processes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meeting with the Chiefs\u2019 Table<\/strong><br \/>\nThroughout the campaign, the AFNQL will implement a series of political and public initiatives to engage parties and candidates.
